The Rotring 800+ is an all-metal pencil made of mostly brass. A black paint coating is then applied to give it a gunmetal look. Over time, this paint wears away, revealing the brass underneath.
The pattern for the knurling was created in Adobe Illustrator and applied as a normal map in Substance Painter. A similar process was used to create a mask for the wear pattern. This allowed the wear to mostly show up on the edges of the knurling.
I designed this model as a low-poly object that could be subdivided cleanly. As a side note, the clip of the pencil is actually made of copper instead of brass.
The tip of the Rotring 800+ is retractable to keep the fragile parts safe. When retracted, the rubber end of the pencil can be used as a smartphone stylus.
Rotring 800+ Mechanical Pencil
This was a small side project that I worked on between work for my classes. Rotring mechanical pencils are very tactile objects, and they tastefully wear in with use. After carrying around my own Rotring 800+ every day for over a year, I just had to see how well I could recreate that tactile sensation with 3D art. All assets shown were created by me, with the exception of the Rotring logo, and the font used for the text.
